SARA is a peer-reviewed journal of the Romanian Academy, appearing annually on July 1^st. The project of a Syriac academic journal in Romania was established in 2020, after many years of considering the best way to take this important step. Considering the growing concerns with Syriac texts among Eastern European scholars, and in particular those in Romania, the journal’s founder and editor-in-chief, Dr. habil. Cătălin-Ștefan Popa, proposed the editorial project to the Department of Historical Sciences and Archeology at the Romanian Academy, which took on this project recognizing it as a significant venture for the historical research of Oriental Christian manuscripts, thereby proposing Romania as an important station along the global route of Syriac studies.

As one of the few Syriac journals around the world, The Syriac Annals of the Romanian Academy (SARA) will provide increasing opportunities for the future of Syriac research in Eastern Europe and beyond. SARA’s objectives are to facilitate an extended vision and build new bridges in the field, encouraging cultural dialogue and proposing new connections between the field of Syriac studies and its Byzantine and Southeast European counterparts.

The journal primarily publishes articles on Syriac topics, but also welcomes original papers focusing on cultural transfers and on the interaction between Syriac Christianity and Arabic culture, Islam and Judaism.
